Country Music Back On The Air In Florida After Police Bust Pirate Hip-Hop Station

September 23rd, 2006 | By Administrator

An aspiring DJ in Hollywood, FL has been arrested for illegally broadcasting Hip-Hop music over the airwaves of a local Country music station.

Darin Satter, 34, allegedly set up a pirate radio station, which interfered with 99.9 WKIS-FM’s signal. For several weeks, fans of the station – which is known as Kiss Country – heard Hip-Hop music playing instead of the usual country format.

When fans of the station started complaining about the music selection, WKIS engineers tracked the pirate signal to a local trailer park.

Broward Sheriff Office detectives arrived and found a 30-foot-tall broadcasting antenna outside of Satter’s trailer.

Satter was arrested and charged with unauthorized transmission/interference with a licensed public radio station. He is facing up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

“I figured he had a 2way radio, you know a hand radio,” Satter’s neighbor said of the 30-foot-antenna.

DJ Paul Says MTV’s ‘Adventures In Hollyhood’ Sure To Draw Laughs

September 21st, 2006 | By Administrator

Memphis, Tenn.-based rap group Three 6 Mafia has teamed with MTV for a new comedic reality series.

The show, titled Adventures in Hollyhood, is set in Los Angeles and follows the Oscar-winning collective and their entourage as they set out to Hollywood in an effort to make the most of their fame and “establish themselves as Hollywood players.”

“The show?is about us winning the Oscar and coming–not moving–to LA,” DJ Paul told AllHipHop.com. “We still live in Memphis, but we got spots in Los Angeles to capitalize and chase paper. I can’t do that in the hood. It’s a comedy and we got a lotta celebrity cameos. It shows us taking meetings, recording, filming, etc., but comedy with it. No boring sitting there negotiating s**t.”

The series, which was green-lighted Wednesday (Sept. 20) by MTV, will premiere in the first quarter of 2007 with eight half-hour episodes.

Adventures in Hollyhood is the latest in a string of accomplishments for Three 6 Mafia since the group captured a best original song Oscar this year for “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp,” from the film Hustle & Flow.

They were recently seen performing in the series premiere of NBC’s Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.

Fans can also catch the group in the upcoming Jackass 2 film, in theaters on Friday. With more than 15 years of experience under their belt, the group is still amazed at how fortunate they’ve become.

“It feel good as hell man,” said DJ Paul. “You know after ‘Sippin on Sizurp’ and ‘Chicken Heads’ blew real big in 2000 I thought that would be the career highs for us. ‘Ridin’ Spinners’ did real good, but not as big as those. But we still sold over a gold album with just that one single so that still was a blessing.

“But we was like ‘let’s just keep the underground rolling. We’ve done our run.’ That was like 2002, already 12 years in the game,” Paul continued. “Then all of a sudden in 2005 the label called us and said ‘when u n***as gonna give us another major release.”

That call marked the beginning of the group’s transition into the mainstream, as work began on their breakthrough release Most Known Unknowns.

“I call it the ‘Watch what you wish for album’ cause we fussed about not being known and getting credit for our role in Hip-Hop being the pioneers of Crunk and at that time, 15 years in the game,” said DJ Paul, who was surprised at the reaction to “Poppin’ My Collar,” the group’s follow up to its hit lead single “Stay Fly.”

“That was a record for us cause we never had a second single do big in our career,” he said. “Then we win an Oscar, of all awards, and we never even been nominated for anything before! I never won s**t in my life–not even in a Sprite bottle top. My winning luck was bad.”

Bad luck seems to be the furthest thing associated with Three 6 Mafia now, as the group prepares for reality show stardom.

“Hollyhood shows how that all went down and more,” DJ Paul said about their rise. “It’s something different from all reality shows. It’s the new Three’s Company, Sanford & Son of this time.”

Pitbull Shuffles Album Release Date, Discusses New Album’s Significance

September 20th, 2006 | By Administrator

Despite the political nature of his forthcoming sophomore disc El Mariel, Cuban American rapper Pitbull said there was a personal connection to the album’s title, which is named after the infamous Cuban boatlift that relocated almost 125,000 Cubanos to Florida.

“My father was involved in that–brought boats over–so it’s all dedicated to him,” the lyricist revealed. “The album [is] just like a roller coaster ride. You know we’re gonna have Afro-Cuban music. You ain’t gonna find no Reggaeton on there, but you gon’ have Crunk music. With me, you never know what you’re gonna get.”

On the album, Pitbull also ruminates on the current state of his native Cuba, as well as the war in Iraq.

Although it was originally scheduled to hit stores Oct. 17, fans will now have to wait until Oct. 31 to hear the rapper’s latest release.

El Mariel is the follow up to his 2004 debut M.I.A.M.I.: Money Is A Major Issue, which sold more than 600,000 copies and was the biggest-selling bilingual Hip-Hop debut since Cypress Hill’s 1991 self-titled debut.

The disc spawned the singles “Culo,” “Dammit Man,” and “Toma.

Pitbull will remain active by performing Oct. 1 at the Latin Grammy Street Party in New York and appearing as one of Tony Montana’s henchmen in the upcoming video game Scarface: The World Is Yours.

Available Oct. 8, the game finds Pitbull riding alongside Montana on missions to help the crime lord recapture his fallen empire and seek vengeance on those who brought him down in the 1983 classic film, which depicts the El Mariel boatlift in the opening scenes of the movie.

In addition to his musical and gaming pursuits, Pitbull has aligned with Rosario Dawson’s Voto Latino, as part of the first text messaging voter registration campaign in U.S. history.

The MC will join the effort in encouraging fans to register to vote by texting the keyword “Pitbull” or “305″ to the number 75444.

Realizing the power of his music, Pitbull is proud to help elevate the status of his fellow Marielitos and others who feel what he is doing.

“I’m out here representing for everybody–every culture. But of course I have to try to bring mine not to the forefront, but at least educate folks on mine,” he said, adding that Hip-Hop has provided an opportunity for people to come together. “I feel that us unified is just powerful and at the same time dangerous. You know, Hip-Hop [has] come to the point [where] people don’t see color. It’s still here, but it’s not at the same time.

“That to me is a beautiful thing right there,” Pitbull continued. “‘Para todo el mundo, para todo la vino’ – ‘for everybody.’ Everybody. We all bleed and breathe at the end of the day. So it’s love.”

Gucci Mane’s Sophomore Album ‘Hard To Kill’ Reveals Rapper’s Ordeals

September 20th, 2006 | By Administrator

Atlanta-based label Big Cat Records has teamed with Tommy Boy Entertainment to release Hard To Kill, the sophomore album by Gucci Mane.

The album is the follow up to the rapper’s debut Trap House, which hit stores while the rapper was incarcerated for a shooting/murder stemming from a feud with Young Jeezy.

“With all that Gucci Mane has seen and been through in this past year, this album s hows how much he has grown lyrically,” Big Cat Records’ President, Mel Breeden, said.

Gucci Mane and Young Jeezy were involved in a dispute over the song “So Icy,” which was a hit for Gucci Mane and included on his album, Trap House, which moved over 125,000 units independently.

The two issued a series of mixtapes disses over the summer of 2005, threatening one another stemming from the dispute over the song.

The tensions culminated when Gucci Mane, born Radric David, was accused of shooting Henry “Pookie Loc” Clark III, after Clark and four other men burst into a house and threatened to attack him in May of 2005.

Clark’s body was found in a wooded area near a Decatur, GA middle school days after the shooting.

Clark was later confirmed to be an associate of Young Jeezy and his label, Corporate Thugs Entertainment.

Gucci Mane was charged with Clark’s murder in May 2005, while promoting Trap House.

Gucci Mane claimed he acted out of self-defense and in Jan. 2006, prosecutors agreed and dropped the murder charge against him.

“We named the project, Hard To Kill because of all of the drama that has surrounded Gucci’s career and he pulled through it all,” Breeden said. “Now he’s back. [He's] hard to kill! Although we had big success with ‘Icy,’ there is a lot more to the story now.”

Gucci Mane’s latest effort discusses his experiences while incarcerated, how he managed to get through the ordeal and the challenges that he still faces.

The first single from the album is another ode to Gucci Mane’s jewelry titled “My Chain.”

Hard To Kill is slated to hit stores in 2007.

UNLV Says Cash Money Owes, Accuses Lil’ Wayne Of Stealing ‘Go D.J.’

September 18th, 2006 | By Administrator

Rap group UNLV is charging that Cash Money Records has failed to pay royalties owed to the group for several albums released by the label.

The group announced that if the record label misses their deadline for payment of royalties to the group, they would proceed in taking legal action.

The New Orleans-based group remains hopeful that an out-of-court settlement may be reached.

“We now join such artists as Juvenile, Mannie Fresh and B. G., who have sued Cash Money for payment,” said Ronald Bell, the spokesman for UNLV. “UNLV sold a number of records from their past albums from 6th and Baronne to Uptown 4 Life, and we are simply seeking compensation which we are due.”

The rappers have also charged Cash Money Records with falsely using their song “Go D.J.” from their 1994 release Gutta 4 Life.

The group alleges the song became a hit when released by Cash Money rapper Lil’ Wayne, on 2004 off his album Tha Carter.

UNLV officially inked a deal with Warlock/TVT records last week and are preparing to release their album, Gutta Muzik, in February 2007.

“We already have a full album ready featuring other artists such as Juvenile, B.G. and L’il Boosie,” said Bell.

Young Jeezy Renames Clothing Line, Working On Album With Akon

September 14th, 2006 | By Administrator

Atlanta GA rapper Young Jeezy recently revealed that he had to rename his clothing line U.S.D.A. (United Streets and Dopeboys of America) to 8732, at the behest of the United States government.

According to Young Jeezy, the government of the United States prevented him from using the U.S.D.A. acronym, which also stands for the United States Department of Agriculture.

“The government won’t let me [name the clothing line] U.S.D.A.,” Young Jeezy told AllHipHop.com. “[So] what I did was, you know back in the day, you know had those little pagers? We would page people numbers for letters. 8732 is U.S.D.A.”

The rapper’s first foray into the clothing world was a success, when his frowning “snowman” promotional T-shirt-shirt became one of the most bootlegged T-shirts-shirts of 2005-2006.

The shirt was banned from numerous school systems because of its alleged drug references.

Young Jeezy said the new 8732 line will feature a variety of urban wear.

“The jackets, the f****ng sweat tops, the Bronze jeans,” Young Jeezy said. “The jeans run anywhere from $120, tops at $120, but you know it’s some nice s**t man. I mean its all snowman.”

The 8732 clothing line is slated to hit stores in late November.

In related news, Young Jeezy and R&B singer Akon are working on an album together, following their successful single “Soul Survivor,” one of the rapper’s biggest hits from his album Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 101.

“I wanted to do a different look, so [when] me and Kon, get together, we always come up with a smash sound,” Young Jeezy said of the new album. “[We said] ‘what if we took our time and our energy and took a couple of months to actually make an album?’ You know Kon is so big overseas. People don’t know that.”

No release date was available for the album.

Young Jeezy has also partnered with Atlanta-based mobile company Hi-Fli Tones to be the face of the company’s new promotional campaign.

Corey ‘C. Miller’ Miller Releasing Limited Edition CD/DVD

September 13th, 2006 | By Administrator

While awaiting a retrial for the 2002 shooting of a teenager, Corey “C. Miller” Miller will release TRU Story: Continued, a special new CD/DVD limited-edition release.

The CD/DVD combo includes the original album, The Truest S*** I Ever Said, as well as, 5 previously unreleased studio tracks.

Additionally, the new release also contains a 60-minute DVD documentary hosted by B.G. that features videos and behind-the-scenes footage.

Directed by New Orleans native Will Horton, the DVD is highlighted with “Y’all Heard Of Me,” the controversial 2005 video that Miller shot while incarcerated inside a New Orleans jail.

Miller was sentenced to full time house arrest last month by Louisiana state Judge Martha Sassone, after he allegedly attended a Hurricane Katrina documentary premiere in New Orleans, after his 10 PM curfew.

Miller was convicted of second-degree murder in Jan. 2002 for the shooting death of 16-year-old Steven Thomas, after an argument inside of the now defunct Platinum Club in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana.

In Feb. 2006, the Louisiana Supreme Court overturned Miller’s murder conviction and ordered a new trial, after it was discovered that prosecutors had withheld evidence from Miller’s defense team.

A date has not been set for the retrial of the rapper.

C. Miller’s TRU Story: Continued is set to arrive in stores on October 17 via Koch Records.

September 11th, 2006 | By Administrator

Houston, Texas rapper Slim Thug has never been silent concerning the success of artists out of his home state.
